I used to work on Rikers Island, New York City's central detention facility. It's a surreal, disturbing, dehumanizing place. Mundane as hell, but deeply dark.

My favorite afterwork coping method: grab some records, fire up the sampler and zone out making beats. Basic hypnotic headnodders on a ‘90s vibe. After years of doing this, my Rikers Beats playlist grew prodigious.

As I write this in 2020, the Island is closed to all but DOC staff and the unfortunate incarcerated, and I haven't been going much of anywhere. So maybe this would be a good time to rummage through the archives and select a few of the signature sounds I rode with on those long days out on the cursed island.

Volume 1 is jazzy instrumental stuff; stay tuned for Volume 2 (The Jeep Beats) and Volume 3 (Classic Golden Era Beat Flips) y mucho mas.

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell

I was brought here after listening to a live performance of Makaya's on you tube. I instantly loved the song Holy Lands so much that I had to see if the album version was the same rendition as the live one. Then I listened to the whole album! Universal Beings is a just a groove...
